Ancient cultures have celebrated the New Year using the vernal equinox, fall equinox, winter solstice, and March 1. In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar to replace the inaccurate, lunar-based Roman calendar. The Julian calendar decreed that the new calendar would have twelve months and the fist day of the year would be January 1.
